Tanay Amirapu

 

Biography

Tanay Amirapu is a researcher based at The University of Auckland. Tanay specialises in community-based disaster risk reduction (CBDRR) and participation, particularly in the South East Asian and Pacific region. He has experience in developing and leading CBDRR projects and research across the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Vanuatu with an emphasis on involving local and marginalised people. In these projects, Mr. Amirapu has collaborated with a host of stakeholders, such as INGOs, universities and local and national governments.

Tanay is currently undertaking a PhD at UoA, researching wildlife and hazards in Southern Africa. He aims to re-conceptualise the notion of ‘hazards’ in disaster studies. In addition, Tanay is Research Associate for TANGO International where he is involved in designing, advising and evaluating NGO development projects, ranging from disaster risk reduction to poverty alleviation.

Tanay is interested in all aspects of development, both in research and practice. He has experience in participatory tools, GIS-mapping and community-based methodology.
