Biography

Nickola studied health promotion as her undergrad at AUT. After working in the field of public health for a few years she decided to go back and study postgrad. She stumbled into the field of emergency management where her Master’s thesis investigated how child participation can be fostered in disaster risk reduction planning and research, using participatory mapping with LEGO. Through her Masters research she became more and more interested about emergency management and the power that the communities play in disasters.

She is currently living in Wellington, New Zealand where she is employed by Wellington Region Emergency Management Office (WREMO) as an Emergency Management Advisor within the Community Resilience Team. She is passionate about building resilience at a community level, in order to reduce vulnerability in the face of hazardous events.
